Springfield, MA

Cindy and I went shopping today while the boys stayed at home.  It was great to have some girl time again.

Later in the afternoon, Bernie and I said goodbye and left Schenectady, New York.  We decided to stay in Springfield, Massachusetts.  The plan is to leave the motor home here and drive the Jeep up to our son’s place in New Hampshire and deliver to him all his “stuff” we packed up from the house.  We’ll do that tomorrow.

We decided to do it this way since we really are headed south to Connecticut on Wednesday and it’s just cheaper and easier to drive the Jeep north to New Hampshire.

There are a lot of toll roads in the northeast.  I’m so glad we purchased a transponder, it saves a lot of time and bother.  In the two hours we drove today we went through six different toll gates.

Our gas purchase for today was only $50.

Schenectady, NY

We bought some fresh picked peaches from a vendor who had a stand setup at one of the rest areas along the interstate… mmm, delicious.

All this driving is making us tired, and tired of it.   Tonight we are near Schenectady, NY, and met up with friends, Cindy and Ed and enjoyed a lovely dinner and evening with them.  We’ll be here tomorrow too, so that will be a welcome break from all the driving as well as spending more time with our friends.

Gas prices were around $3.69 and $3.75 in Pennsylvania and New York.  Our gas expense today was $189.80.

Erie, PA

Another day of just driving.  Today we were up early to try to beat the Chicago area rush hour.  It went quite well as we had no delays.  We put on 414 miles today and crossed into Eastern Time Zone, so we lost an hour.  We are on our way to visit my friend, Cindy, in New York.  It’s still 364 miles to her house, so we should be able to be there Saturday night some time.

Our gas expense today was $195.  We saw prices of $3.83 to $4.19 in IL, and $3.81 to $3.91 in OH.  We are finding lower prices in PA, as low as $3.73.

Tripple

Along this drive today from Chicago, IL, to Erie, PA, we have seen a lot of triple trailers.  No big deal, but just something different to see that I don’t see in Minnesota.  And I didn’t have anything else to take pictures of.

Joliet, IL

We met some people who were on their way home on an RV trip to Alaska.  They said it was a great trip, no problems at all.

Nothing much to report today.  We just drove as far as Joliet, IL, which is close to Chicago.  It rained all the way, at times thunder and lightning.  I think we’ve seen more water today than we have all summer.

Gas prices have been anywhere from $3.859 to $4.09 cash or $4.15 credit card.  Our gas cost for the day was a total of $300.02, averaging 7 miles per gallon.

Goodbye House–Hello Road

SOLD

SOLD!

And the adventure begins!   The house actually sold a few weeks ago and I’ve been anxious for the “sold” sign to appear.  Our plans were to leave for the east coast today.  Finally the “sold” sign went late yesterday!

Last week we had a family picnic and filled the yard with about 60 people, it was a blast…how great to see everyone again before we leave.

Our goal was to head out at noon today, but you know how it goes…all those last-minute details and errands to run and goodbyes to say.  We managed to lock the door to the house for the last time around 3:00 p.m. and head out for our new life on the road as full-time RVers.

Inside RV

Clean house but messy RV

In our haste to get on with our journey we had to scamper to get everything done.  The house looks really nice totally empty, but the inside of the RV kinda got dumped on.  The next few days will be spent tidying up and finding home spots for everything.  We still have a lot of “stuff” in our life.

Once we got moving we only went about 45 miles and stopped to wait out the rush hour traffic before heading into Minneapolis.  We stopped in the parking lot of a very new Fleet Farm store in Carver, MN.  While we were waiting we went shopping.  Eventually we headed up to I-494 and had no problems getting through Minneapolis and St.Paul, making it only to Menominee, Wisconsin, when it got dark and the rain began.

For Sale

Finally!  We have managed to dispose of most of our “stuff”.  More people have come with pickup trucks and trailers, more boxes have been donated to charity, more to recycling, and more to trash.

And another load goes out

I didn’t get a picture of every load that went out but I did remember to get this one of my sister and her friend as they were ready to leave with a SUV load and a trailer load of furniture and other goodies.

Now that most of the stuff is gone we have been able to focus on prepping the house for sale.  We stripped old wallpaper and painted and switched out the dining room light fixture. We’re good to go!  It’s on the market! woo!

FOR SALE! OMG!

Oh wow, reality hits.  Let’s hope somebody buys it now.  It’s been shown three times and one more scheduled for Saturday morning.  Knock on wood.

More Goes

The John Deere Goes Bye Bye

Shannon came and took the John Deere today.  The neighbor boy will be mowing our yard until we can get the house sold.

We’re still working on disposing of our posessions.. what a job.  A lot has been donated to charities.  We’re still recycling what we can and filling our garbage can every week.

A few more pickup loads have gone.

Lowell took stuff for scrap metal.

Steve with a pickup load.

Cleaning Out

Since we got back home we’ve been going through all our things.  It’s a bit overwhelming the amount of stuff we have accumulated over the years.  I don’t think we ever got rid of anything!  This is going to take some time.  I took pictures of the larger items and posted them in an online album for the relatives to pick from.  Some have made claims.

Kyle With His Load

Kyle was first come get what he wanted

Andy came with a trailer and a friend to help load things.

Several boxes of misc stuff went to the Epilepsy Foundation, several boxes to the local charity, and loads of stuff to the local recycling center.  And, lots went to garbage.  There is still tons left.  Soon I will take more pictures and add to the online album.  Whatever the relatives won’t take I will offer to friends and neighbors.

The house has not been listed with a realtor yet, as we need to de-clutter and make it half way presentable before we make that step.

It’s a good feeling to clean out like this.  Should have done it years ago, but we weren’t ready to let go until now. Of course there will be some things we just cannot part with and we’ll have to find storage for.  And if the house never sells and we have to stay, it’s OK.  We’d just start fresh.

Big Decision

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think we would RV full-time.  Sure, the thought crossed our minds recently, but we never seriously considered it.  During our travels the last few years we have met several people who RV full-time.  Every one of them said how they love it and had no regrets.  Many have been doing it for several years…6 years, 10 years, etc.

Then, at the Good Sam Rally in Phoenix, Arizona, last month we attended some seminars on full-timing and came to the conclusion that this can be a reality for us.  We just finished our third year as snowbirds, this last winter in our “new” rig which was quite comfortable.

A trip to Alaska for a summer is on our bucket list.  Not this year, as we have a wedding in the family that we cannot miss.  So our plan is to head south again this winter, then head to Alaska next summer.

Downsizing is another thing that needs doing at this time in our lives.  29 years of accumulation….all the “things” that were important to us at one time now have become forgotten items in the corners of the basement.  Funny how the basement filled up.  What will become of all this stuff if something should happen to either or both of us?  Who will deal with it?

And then there is the cost of maintaining a house we won’t be in:  The property taxes, insurance costs, utilities costs, who will mow the lawn? snow removal.

We love the house, have had many good years living here, but it’s time for it to go.

Just as we were pondering all this the telephone rang… it was the Epilepsy Foundation saying there were going to be in the neighborhood next week and looking for donations.  It’s a sign!

Winnebago Industries

Winnebago Industries has a campground for its customers who are waiting for service.  We stayed with about 10 other rigs.  The technicians came and pulled all of us into service bays first thing in the morning.  While we were waiting we went up to the Visitor Center and signed up for the factory tour.  The visitor center has lots of information and history, and we saw a 20 minute movie before the tour.  Then we all got on a Plant Tour bus (a modified Winnebago RV, of course) and they drove us around the grounds.  It covers over 500 acres and currently employs about 2,000 workers.  We got to see the workers on the assembly lines in all stages of manufacture, from floors, cabinets, upholstery, walls, paint. and assembly. it was a very interesting tour, but no cameras were allowed so sad to say, no pictures.

Winnebago Industries Visitor Center
At closing time our rig was not yet finished.  It turns out a small water leak we had in the front left corner requires the windshield to be removed, resealed, and replaced, and they didn’t have time to finish that today.  Also, they had done some damage to one of the inside walls while they were working and they will have to replace an internal pannel tomorrow too.  So, that means we will be staying another night in their campground.

While we were waiting for our rig we met and had a nice visit with Patty Steger, the owner of Steger Mukluks & Moccasins in Ely, Minnesota.  She had a new RV all painted up with graphics from her company.  She was traveling with her big sweetheart of a dog, Luke.

Patty and Luke came over to see our home.  Marble came out of hiding to look, but would not come very close.  Very brave of her.

Forest City, Iowa

We have a service appointment in the morning at the Winnebago/Itasca manufacturing plant in Forest City, Iowa.  This is where our rig was made.  It’s only a few miles off the road home so we thought we would take advantage of that and get some warranty work done there. Nothing serious, just a few small water leaks.  Maybe we’ll be able to get a tour of the plant while we are here.
The plant has camping spots with electricity for it’s visitors.  We parked the rig and took the car to visit nearby Pilot Knob State Park.  In the park we found a short hiking trail that took us up to a lookout tower on the second highest point in Iowa, at elevation 1,450 feet.

View from the tower.  It’s flat like this in all directions.  It was kinda overcast, but the sun did come back out later.

Iowa

We’re getting close. In Osceola, Iowa. Almost no Internet so far in this state so this will be brief.

Silly Texas

The painted up Cadillac cars I posted about yesterday were on the west side of Amarillo, TX.  In nearby Conway, TX, east of Amarillo we found these five Volkswagen Beetles nose down in the ground, an obvious spoof to the Cadillac Ranch.  A nearby old car got the paint work as well.  An old building there also got the paint.

And then we learned that just south of Amarillo, in Canyon, TX, are several retired combines sunk in the ground at an angle. Another spoof.  We did not drive down there to see them, so I just snatched this picture off the Internet for you to see.  I don’t know if they’ve been spray painted up or not.

We drove as far as Blackwell, Oklahoma, and will spend the night in the Walmart lot there.

Amarillo, TX

We’ve crossed back into Central Time!  We’ll be home soon.  Today, we drove as far as Amarillo, Texas.
Just before you get to town is a line of ten junker Cadillacs buried nose-down in a field along I-40.  These were placed here by a group of art-hippies in 1974.  People would stop along the highway, walk out to view the cars–then deface them or rip off pieces as souvenirs.  Over the years this behavior has evolved to the point that you are now encouraged to spray paint them.  Unfortunately, I did not have any paint with me, or I would have left my mark too, even though it would be painted over in no time.

Some people get a little carried away with the paint.  There is a fence and a gate that are all painted up, as well as this garbage dumpster.
You’re Not Supposed to Paint the Dumpster!!!
I met a lady there grumbling about her co-workers who always drag her to these “largest ball of twine” places.  I laughed and told her I live in Minnesota and only 10 miles away from the “largest ball of twine”.  It was funny.  It was.  We laughed.

Grants, New Mexico

The great “Return to Minnesota” migration has begun.  We’re on our way home, and so are a lot of other Minnesotans, as well as a lot of Canadians.
We’ll be spending the night in a Walmart parking lot in Grants, New Mexico, tonight.  We’re just tired of driving.  It’s only 5pm here, and there are five other RV’s parked in the back of the Walmart lot with us.  I’m sure more will arrive shortly.
We did stop at Winslow, Arizona, and took this picture at the “Standin’ on the Corner Park”  they had there on Main Street.

Camp Verde, Tuesday

We spent last night at Distant Drums RV Park, refreshed all our tanks, and enjoyed having electricity and TV Cable.  It’s a nice park, we were here earlier this winter, and will probably return again the next time we are in this area.  But for now we want to save some money so we left this morning and moved to the other side of the freeway where there is a small casino that will allow one overnight RV parking for free.
We drove to nearby Cornville (funny name for a desert town) and had lunch with a friend of mine from Minnesota who is wintering in Sedona.  It was great to see her again.
Then back to the casino.  We found a hiking trail and hiked the desert for a short time and went into the casino to look around, but did not gamble.
More RVs have moved into the parking lot by us, now there are 6 more here.
I tried to upload more pictures for today’s blog but got another notice that my photo storage is full.  I could upgrade but I don’t want to pay and don’t want to give them my credit card number.  For now I will have to delete old pictures before I can add new ones. 😦  I don’t want to do that.  I’ll be looking for a new blog program for next year’s blog.

Return to Camp Verde

They did announce last night that the number of RVs attending the rally was around 3,800. They wanted everyone gone by 11:00 this morning. We managed to squeeze out of our tight spot around 8:00 and joined the steady stream of rigs heading out.

We need to dump our holding tanks and need to fill our water tank. After 5 days of dry camping we need services. We decided to re-visit Distant Drums RV Park at Camp Verde, between Phoenix and Flagstaff and get refreshed. We were here a few months back.

The place is packed, but they found a spot for us. I have no Internet signal of my own and I think everyone here must be using the free wi-fi the park offers. It’s a struggle to get this blog online today, so this is it, I won’t even try to post pictures.

The Rally, Sunday

More seminars today.  Bernie went to Generator Maintenance, LED lighting,  and Solar Panels, while I attended a very interesting History of RVing, and we both attended “So You Want to Full-Time” and another RVing to Alaska seminar.
I just couldn’t get a picture to illustrate the number of RVs that are here.  I heard numbers anywhere from 3,500 to 6,000 are here.  I don’t know for sure.  We are packed in pretty tight.  It’s been a lot of fun.  The rally part is over now and all that is left is the entertainment for tonight.  The band is Ticket to Ride and they will be doing a Beatles tribute.  Some RVs have left already and some will leave tonight after the entertainment.    They say they want us all out of here by 10am tomorrow.  That may be a challenge, I can’t imagine all of us leaving at the same time that early in the morning.
