Yellowstone Park 2

The last two nights the Billings, Montana, and east of there had some severe weather. There are more severe weather warnings out for that same area tonight, with torrential rains and flash flood watches.  That is the area we need to drive through to get home and we have no desire to drive into that so we are parked at Walmart for most of today and tonight in Laurel, just west of Billings.

Since we haven’t done anything today other than drive a little and shop at Walmart here are some more pictures from our visit to Yellowstone Park yesterday.

Yellowstone Park

A visit to Yellowstone Park was not on our main agenda this trip but we are so close we couldn’t pass up a one-day drive-through.  It was a lot of driving with the Jeep, but better that than drive the RV in.  This is not the first visit for us.  I think this might even be my 5th time here.   It really takes a few days to see it all properly, we plan a return trip in a year or two for that proper experience.

Yellowstone National Park

Mammoth Hot Springs

Yellowstone National Park is home to Old Faithful and the majority of the world’s geysers and hot springs.  It’s also a very beautiful mountain wildland and home to free-ranging herds of bison and elk.

This is only half of the semi-circle of people waiting for Old Faithful to erupt.

And Old Faithful was true to her reputation, erupting right on schedule.

The only wildlife we saw this time were a few bison and some swans.  I remember seeing lots more on previous visits. Hopefully next time we will see more.

Then late afternoon we had to drive through a patch of road construction as we were driving some narrow winding mountain roads.  As if that wasn’t bad enough it began to rain, and then lightning and thunder.  As we were driving out of Yellowstone the rain let up and we had the pleasure of seeing a complete rainbow.

Prison, Old Cars, Dolls, and Deer

We toured the Old Montana Prison today.  The self-guided tour was really very interesting.  We wandered around the cell block, the warden’s office, the isolation cells for the troublesome inmates, and “The Hole” for the really obstinate inmates, the mess hall, the yard, and all the rest.

And that’s not all, our tickets also provided us admission to a doll museum across the street.  This was bigger than it looked, the first room was a huge collection of Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls.  Beyond that was a big room of porcelain dolls, and beyond that a model train collection.

AND that’s not all, our tickets also provided us admission to an old west museum and a Milwaukee RR Exhibit and a few other museums that we did not get to.  We were anxious to be on our way.

After we checked in to an RV park we went for a drive (as if we hadn’t had enough) and saw many deer.

Montana

We jumped another time zone again today, now in Mountain Time.  This has been another day of just driving, not stopping to see much.  The west side of Montana is very beautiful, we’re seeing mountains and lakes as well as farms and ranches.  There are cattle and sheep and fields of corn and alfalfa.

The sun came out and it warmed up to 82.

Montana

Montana

We started seeing several billboards advertising 50,000 Silver Dollar.  I fell for it…all the repeated advertisement over the miles left me feeling a little pressured to visit this place. It was time for a break, and they had ice cream.  And they had souvenirs, and gifts, and a casino, and a western bar, and a restaurant and bathrooms!

True to their claim, the lounge inside really did have 50,000 silver dollars embedded into wood panels and hanging on the wall and covered the bartop.  The first coin was placed on the bartop in 1952.  They say they are still adding about 1500 coins per year.

A little further down the road, the town of Clinton, Montana, we see this sign.  Darn, we missed the Testicle Festival!  Maybe next time.

Washington

Today we drove through city, mountains, forest, desert, and city again. Wow, it’s 90 degrees and sunny. This takes some getting used to after all the cool cloudy and wet weather we have seen.

We’re on Interstate 95 now, a direct route to Minnesota!  Also, a direct route to the east coast where our kids are (only 3,000 miles to go).

Wild stallion sculptures can be seen by a rest area near Vantage, Washington.   We stopped for a picture.  There is a trail to hike up there but it was too hot for us.

So much country, so little time.  We will not be exploring the state of Washington or Oregon right now, saving that for another trip.  We want to get to Minnesota to hang out with the rellies for a while before heading to the east coast to hang out with the kiddos for a while before going south for the winter. Speaking of winter…we had our first snowplow sighting today.

Goodbye Alaska, Hello 48!

Our ferry boarding time wasn’t until late afternoon on Friday so the morning was spent exploring more of Ketchikan. We found a hiking trail in the rainforest behind the town and went for a walk. It was wonderful, and no mosquitoes!

A Walk in the Rainforest

Here we go. I was one of the first to board the Matanuska.

Bernie was towards the end of the line so I had time to park and make my way to an upper deck and watch him drive in.

The Matanuska can carry up to 499 passengers, 88 vehicles, has 108 cabins, a solarium, a cafeteria and a cocktail lounge. There is also a recliner lounge where they play movies.

It was not raining this time when we boarded, but no sooner had we begun our journey it began to rain again.

By the time we reached Prince Rupert in British Columbia, Canada, jumped a time zone (into Pacific Time), and made it through customs it was almost two o’clock Saturday morning. We found a free pull-out just outside of town and slept there. Sunday we drove and drove. At a visitor center in Williams Lake, BC, we saw this display. It’s not too far off! We did see some creative packing in our travels. We spent the night at a roadside pull-out.

Alaska or Bust!

Alaska or Bust!

Monday we just drove. We stayed at an RV park in Clinton, BC. The last nearly three weeks have been nothing but cool, cloudy, foggy, and rainy. It was such a pleasure to enjoy a warm sunny day for a change, it was over 80F. We went for a walk and took some pictures.

Ketchikan

Ketchikan is another island community accessible by sea and by air.  The Salmon Capital of the World.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan, Alaska

It is also a big cruise ship destination.  There were four big cruise ships here today.  Two Princess Cruises and two from Holland America Lines.  The Diamond Princess was just docking as we were walking along the Waterfront Promenade so we stopped and watched the process.

Princes Cruise Ship

We did take a little land tour out to see some wildlife.  We saw some bald eagles, lots of salmon and seagulls, and these two black-tail deer.

The world’s largest collection of totem poles can be found here in Ketchikan.  Some can be found in the downtown area.  There are a few totem parks nearby.  We went out to visit Totem Bight State Park and saw what they had there.

Totem Bight State Park

Friday we take another ferry, this one will be a 6 hour cruise.  This time we go to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada, where we will continue our travels by land. I will be turning off my cell phone and internet service while we are in Canada.  Unless I find free wi-fi along the way I will not be blogging until we are back in the lower 48 states, in the state of Washington.  Hopefully not more than a week.  We have mountains and many miles to drive yet.  Stay tuned.

Sitka to Ketchikan

The Marine Vessel Columbia was the ferry we took from Sitka to Ketchikan.  It can hold up to 600 passengers and 134 vehicles.   It has two car decks, some cars are brought up to the 2nd deck via a big elevator.  There are also 103 cabins, and we got one of them so we have our own bathroom with a shower.

We departed Sitka at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday for a 22.5 hour ferry to Ketchikan, Alaska.  And of course it was raining.

M/V Columbia

M/V Columbia

This is a big ferry.  It has two large observation decks in the front, a Solarium, an outside passenger seating area, and two tent camping areas.  There is also a snack bar and a very nice full service restaurant as well as a cocktail lounge and a movie theater.

One of Two Observation Decks on Columbia

One of Two Observation Decks on Columbia

Remember, this is a ferry, not a cruise ship.  People camp out in the solarium with their sleeping bags and small tents.  They use duct tape to hold the tents down.  Others who do not have cabins are sleeping in recliners or benches wherever they can find a spot.  They just can’t “camp out” in the observation rooms.

The Solarium

The Solarium and Tent Area

We are on this ferry for only two days while some of these people are on it for a week.

The last few weeks in Alaska has been so cloudy and wet for us.  Today was no different. It’s still beautiful, we’re traveling in and out around hundreds of islands and mountains, but a little sunshine would make for more colorful pictures.

Cloudy

Cloudy

And then it got worse.  A dense fog set in and the captain stopped the boat.  We sat still for the next eight hours while we waited for the fog to lift.  Dodging all these islands, and squeezing through “The Narrows” was too risky to proceed.

Fog

Fog

Finally!  The fog lifts and we’re on our way again.  We even got to see some blue sky and sunshine.  We have missed that.  Now we can walk around outside.  It’s still cool, around 60 degrees, but that’s ok.

Yay, the Sun's Out!

Yay, the Sun’s Out!

We made two stops on the way to Ketchikan.  One in Petersburg and one in Wrangell. Each time they asked Bernie to move the RV off so they can off-load some trucks and then he can re-load the RV.  Then they have to let some cars off and then load up the new passengers.  These people really have their act together and things went smoothly. They wanted to make up for lost time as we were now 8 hours behind schedule and they managed to keep their stop time down to around 30 minutes each time!

This is the best way to travel in Alaska.  The state is almost all mountains or water and roads are few and far between.  It beats driving!

Sitka is only about 9,000 in population so it didn’t take long to drive around it. We did stop to see Castle Hill. It’s a state park right in town and it’s where Russia transferred its Alaska claims to the United States in a ceremony there in 1867.

Juneau, AK

We could have used a whole week to see Juneau, but one day is all we have, so here are just a few of the 100+ pictures from what we crammed into one day….

Haines to Juneau

Our trip back to the lower 48 states will be quite different from when we went up.  This time we are putting the motor home onto a ferry.  This will save us probably a thousand miles of driving.  This will involve four separate ferry boats.  The first one was today, a five and one-half hour cruise on the Malaspina.  It can hold 499 passengers and 88 vehicles.

M/V Malaspina

M/V Malaspina

And, of course, it was raining pretty good when we started.  The loading process went smoothly. It was cheaper to go as two separate vehicles rather than the combined connected length.  And that made it possible for me to snap this pic of Bernie driving down the loading ramp into the car deck.

P1000892

Loading Onto the Ferry

We are not allowed to stay in the car deck with the vehicles but there were some nice seating areas, a restaurant, and a bar, and a movie theater on board.  Private cabins were also available for those who wanted to pay extra.  We did not for this short trip, but we will on a different ferry later.

The rain eventually let up but the clouds remain.  We were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way.  Never ending mountains.

My how things have changed since we arrived in Alaska.  When we got here around the first of July, sunset was around midnight with sunrise only four hours later.  We had to put blankets over the windows to keep it dark inside.  Now, here, it’s 8:30 p.m. and it’s dark already.

It got cold and windy so we spent the rest of the day at home.  There was a Princess Cruise ship that could not get to Skagway as planned because of the bad weather so it dropped in on Haines unexpected today.  Tomorrow we have reservations to put the motor home on a big ferry to Juneau, let’s hope the weather improves.

Skagway, AK

Skagway, one of the oldest towns in Alaska, and a key player in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-1898, once described as “the roughest place in the world” and is only 14 miles from Haines–by water.  If you want to drive your car there it’s more like 250 miles around the mountains.  We took the Fast Ferry that got us there in 45 minutes.

Borders and Bears

Yesterday we crossed into Canada and just drove all day on the Alaska highway until we got to Haines Junction, Canada.  This time at the border crossing we were only asked three questions:  Where are you headed today? Any animals on board?  Any weapons? And then we were on our way.

Canada Border Crossing

Canada Border Crossing

The next 80 miles of the Alaska highway were the worst, and we knew we were in for it. Even driving 30-40 miles per hour the motor home was rockin’ and rollin’ and I can’t say for sure that no tire ever went airborne along that stretch of road.  The rig held up well in spite of it all but some of the contents of the cabinets and the refrigerator did rearrange themselves.

I fell for this speed trap on the way up to Alaska but not on the return trip.  Look closer..it’s a plywood cutout of the police car, not at all real.

About an hour before reaching Haines, Alaska, is the U.S. Border Crossing.  This time we were asked 6 questions and they wanted to know if we had any fresh fruits or vegetables that we bought in Canada, which we did not.  They also want to know if we were carrying more than $10,000 with us, which we were not.

A few fish wheels can be seen operating along the route.  These turn and scoop up any fish that swim through it and slides them off to the side into a bucket for the owner. Slick.

Finally, Bears!  There is a great place to view bears about 6 miles down the road from our campground so we drove out there to see.  This mama and her cub walked out of the woods right behind us as soon as we got there.

Full Circle

OK, this morning we tried one last time to see the bears with no luck. But while we were out there we took a look around the fish hatchery. There is a public walkway that provides a good viewing.

We watched as the salmon jumped, trying to make it upstream. But so sad for them, once they made the jump they were redirected to the fish ladder on the left.

Once they make their way to the top of the fish ladder they are ushered into the Spawning Building where a team of workers separates the boys from the girls and harvests their goodies. You know what I’m talking about. There are viewing windows where visitors can watch the process.

We said goodbye to Valdez and drove about 250 miles back to Tok, completing a counter clockwise circular route of highways. It was five weeks ago that we were here when we first entered Alaska from Canada on the ALCAN highway.

No bears, but this magpie was looking for a handout.

Black-billed Magpie

Black-billed Magpie

Other than the fish and birds we did not see any wildlife. The weather has improved, still a little cloudy but at least we are seeing bits of blue sky now and it’s dryer. It’s about 60 degrees. The drive from Valdez was just as beautiful as the rest of the entire state of Alaska. One mountain after another.

Driving the Tok Cutoff

Driving the Tok Cutoff

The Tesoro gas station in Tok offers a free wash with a fill of gas. They also have free sanitary dump and potable water. We asked permission to dry camp here overnight and it was ok. Not a great view but it beats paying $40 for a RV park when all we want to do is sleep. We paid almost $300 for gas here. There are always pull-outs along the road that are free to dry camp overnight but I can’t get Internet out there.

Canada is only 90 miles from here. We are not done with Alaska, we plan to visit Haines and Juneau and Skagway but the only way to get there by driving is to go back through Canada for a while first.

Valdez in the Rain

It’s rained cats and dogs today.

The locals have told us that if we want to see bear we need to drive down by the fish hatchery on Dayville Road.  There are a lot of salmon trying to make their way up stream to spawn and the bears are after them there.   But we’ve been out there five times already and all we have seen is a lot of dead fish, no bear.  We’ll just have to endure the beautiful scenery.

It’s a good day for indoor things.  The Valdez Museum has some very good exhibits on the history of the town as well as much about the 1964 earthquake, the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, the building of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and the building of the Alaskan Highway.

The price of admission to the Valdez Museum includes admission to the Remembering Old Valdez Exhibit which is just down the street a few blocks.

After the 1964 earthquake, which devastated the community, the original town of Valdez was found to have been built on unstable ground and was condemned.   A new town site was located about four miles west.  Around 50 of the surviving buildings from Old Valdez were moved to the new location.  The museum exhibit includes a replica of all of Old Valdez.

Meares Glacier Excursion

The cloudy weather has been sucking the color out of my pictures the last few weeks.  It was refreshing to get this splash of color first thing this morning as we were on our way to board for our cruise.  Looks like these folks are getting ready for a kayak outing.

Color!

The cruise left at 10:00 a.m.  There were only 47 of us today, which is about half capacity, so plenty of elbow room.

Rain was in the forecast again, so we expected it to be cloudy and damp.  It did stay cloudy all day and there was some rain, but nothing serious.  Temps felt like they were around 45 degrees but the boat was heated and we were very comfortable inside.

Our destination was to visit the Meares Glacier.  Along the way we encountered several icebergs.  These came from the Columbia Glacier, which was not included in our tour as there wasn’t enough time in the day to visit both glaciers.  But we did have to cruise through the glacial ice that had traveled several miles from it.

Then in the middle of no where we stopped to pick up a passenger.  It seemed odd to pull along side this little boat out in the middle of the water.  But it is not an uncommon thing for people who work out here, construction workers or for whatever reason, to be brought out here to the cruise route to hitch a ride out.

The wildlife was being shy today and we didn’t see a lot.  But we did circle this raft of sea otters who were just chillin’ out and didn’t seem too worried about us.

Finally we reached the Meares Glacier.  This is one of the only advancing tidewater glaciers in North America.  Most other glaciers are shrinking.  The captain brought the boat to within 1/4 mile and stayed there for about 45 minutes while we watched it calve.  We could hear the crack and thunder and saw several large chunks break off and fall into the water.

Valdez, AK

Just when I though we had seen the most beautiful scenic drives ever–it got better.  The drive from Glennallen to Valdez is even more jaw-dropping than what we had seen before. It has to be experienced, I just can’t gather all that wonderment into a few photos.  Temps ranged from 47-60 and cloudy and hazy at times.  Here are some pictures from our drive:

Hello

We bought tickets for a 9-hour cruise tomorrow out to see some glaciers and wildlife.  Would love to see an orca.  The weather forecast is for rain, but that seems to be the way it is this whole month so we are not going to let that stop us.

Sarah and Glennallen

We’ve been laying low the last few days, in Eagle River by Anchorage.  I had to find a dentist to take care of a painful tooth.  Ended up having it extracted, so we wanted to stick around for a few days in case there were any problems with it, which there were not.

To pass the time we did a lot of shopping; not “buying”, just shopping.  Wednesday we went back to Wasilla for the day.  The information center there has a cardboard cutout of Sarah Palin.  I couldn’t resist taking her picture.

Today we headed west on the Glenn Highway towards the small town of Glennallen.  It was cloudy, foggy, and sometimes rainy but we could still see the beautiful panoramic views.

Alaskan Russian Orthodox Churches

The US purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 so there is still some Russian influence here. We have run across several fully functional Russian Orthodox churches during our travels here.  We visited a few of them today that are near Anchorage.

The graveyard near the two St. Nicholas Churches is an Orthodox Christian Cemetery, and is still in use today.  Spirit Houses are placed over the grave 40 days after the burial to house the spirit of the deceased and their possessions.  The colors of the houses are specific to the families.  This is sort of a combination of Russian and native burial practices.
