Driving East

We left Forest City, Iowa, early this morning and drove 315 miles east, stopping at Princeton, Illinois, for the night.

It was a beautiful day for a drive so we just kept on going. The drive was uneventful. We did stop for a while at the World’s Largest Truckstop on I-80, filled up with gas and walked around a bit to stretch our legs.

Shortly after that we crossed the border into Illinois.

The Day The Music Died

We were up early and moved the RV over to the service lot where we lined up with several others who were there for service too. Our 34′ rig is dwarfed by most of the others which are 40-footers.

IMG_7163

While we were waiting we took the car to explore the area.  On a small lot in downtown Forest City is a Bicycle Parking lot.  A sign says the sculptures are pieces of art created with 100% recycled bicycle parts and donated by artists Steve Johnson and Andy Sinnwell in 2010. You are invited to park your bike here while you enjoy downtown.

IMG_7168

Forest City is a small town. It was pretty sleepy when we were there this morning.

After walking downtown and stopping for brunch at Sally’s Restaurant we got back in the car and went for a drive. One of the interesting things we saw was a vacation rental house in Clear Lake, Iowa, the shape of a pyramid.

IMG_7193

Also in Clear Lake is the Surf Ballroom. This is the site of the last performance of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper before their plane crashed nearby. It is preserved to look as it did in 1959.

IMG_7197

Of course a visit to the crash site can’t be missed. A few miles outside of town a large pair of Buddy Holly glasses marks the entrance to a 1/4 mile path that takes you between soybean fields to the actual crash location.

IMG_7222

We parked the car on the country road by five other cars and walked the 1/4 trail. The site is still frequently visited. People still leave small offerings to the rock legends.

And, not too far from there is a tiny church, Guardian Angel Roadside Chapel. Named because of an event that happened in the life of Marguerite Williams in the early 1900’s.  She believed a guardian angel saved her from being abducted by gypsies.

After all that exploring we returned to the Service Center at Winnebago Industries to wait for our “home” to return to us.  We brought it there to re-seal the roof, which needs to be done periodically. Sure don’t want any leaks! Plus a few other minor adjustments needed. Finally, late afternoon, it was ready for us.

Since it was so late and was getting pretty windy we decided to stay overnight here one more time. So, weather permitting, we will move on in the morning.

Winnebago Factory Tour

Leaving Albert Lea this morning we went south into Iowa to Forest City to the manufacturing plant where our motorhome was built. They have lots of RV parking spots with electricity for its customers. We selected a spot in the parking lot of Winnebago Industries Visitor Center and went inside.

“You can’t take SEX, BOOZE or WEEKENDS away from the AMERICAN PEOPLE” says John Hanson, Founder of Winnebago Industries

We came here because we had a few minor things that we hoped they could fix for us at the service center. Although we did not have an appointment they were happy to put us on a waiting list. We figured we would stay today (Thursday) and Friday, but if they could not get us in we would not stay through the weekend.

While we were waiting we took the free tour of the manufacturing plant.  The plant includes several buildings on 600 acres of land. Our tour guide said they usually pop out about 200 completed RV’s every week. We saw all different models of RV in all stages of assembly.  This was the third time we have taken this tour and we still find it fascinating. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take any pictures. I took the picture here from a photo in the Visitor Center.

We just received a call from the Service Center, they have given us a 7:00 a.m. appointment tomorrow morning.

Heading Out!

We’re off!  We are on our way to New Hampshire and Connecticut to spend some time with our kids before we go south for the winter. Right now there are no specific plans of what to see along the way, and we have no reservations. We’re just going to “wing it” and see what happens.

Our plans were to leave this morning, but it was raining and the wind was increasing so we thought maybe we would have to leave tomorrow instead of today. By mid-afternoon we decided we would go today anyway. It rained off and on and the wind wasn’t too terribly bad after all. We headed to Minneapolis and took I-35 south driving only about 175 miles to Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Our first night on the road this time around will be spent in a Walmart parking lot. Not glamorous but will do for a night. We’re just passing through.

Not much for a first day blog entry, but I never said it would be exciting.

We’re always watching gas prices. Today we saw prices of $2.66/gallon and $2.77.

Here We Go Again! #4

August is the beginning of our fourth year of our full-time RV living and traveling. The last three years have been fun, and we are ready for another year of it.

We have spent most of the summer in our former home town of Hutchinson, Minnesota, taking care of business and catching up with so many of the friends and relatives who live in southern Minnesota. There were also a few side trips around the state while we were here. Here are some pictures from our summer:

We had some damage on the back of our RV that had been there for a while and we thought it was about time we had it repaired. We took it to CMS Auto Body in St. Joseph, Minnesota, which is about an hour north of where we are. Since they wanted to keep it for a couple of days to get this done we took the car and continued on up north a few more hours drive and spent a few days in Duluth and drove up the north shore of Lake Superior.

Canal Park in Duluth is a good place to watch the ships arrive, a favorite thing for Minnesotan’s to do since this is the farthest inland freshwater seaport and one of the leading bulk cargo ports in all of North America as well as the largest and busiest on the Great Lakes. It is only 2,342 miles to the Atlantic Ocean from here.

It was only 171 steps down to the water to get the good view of Split Rock Lighthouse and, ya, 171 going back up.

After a few days up north we returned to CMS Auto Body to pick up the RV. They did a super job and we were very pleased.

The Mall of America is one of my favorite stops.

We are leaving Minnesota next week and returning to New Hampshire and Connecticut to see our kids again. Our plans are to spend time with them and do some exploring in the NorthEast before heading south along the East Coast when the weather starts turning cold. There are no specific plans and no reservations, that’s just how we roll. Our winter will be spent traveling in and around Florida and the Gulf Coast. And I will be blogging all the way.

Back to the Start

Finally, after leaving Minnesota nine months ago, traveling to Washington State, down the beautiful Oregon Coast, seeing the Giant Redwoods forest, Death Valley, Lake Havasu, Yuma Arizona, taking an incredible Amtrak train trip from Arizona to New Hampshire (to see our new grandson!) and back, then driving on to Louisiana, up the Natchez Trace, Gettysburg, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival, visiting our daughter in Connecticut, and our son and his family in New Hampshire, and many other things in between, we are now back in our home town of Hutchinson, Minnesota. What a trip.

We’ve been driving many miles the last couple of days as we make our way to Minnesota from New Hampshire, dealing with a lot of road construction, rough roads, and rain storms. It was good to once again see that “Welcome to Minnesota” sign.

Welcome to Minnesota

Welcome to Minnesota

I have missed the corn fields! Go figure.

IMG_6648

We will probably stay around here for a few months while we catch up with friends and relatives and take care of business like dentist appointments and such.

I will take a break from blogging until we head out on our next adventure this fall. Who wants to hear about our grocery shopping and laundry experiences anyway?

Corning Museum of Glass

Wow, who knew a glass museum could be so much fun? We stopped in Corning, New York, to visit the Corning Museum of Glass, being there when the doors opened at 9:00 and stayed all day, it was that interesting.

IMG_6447

Corning Museum of Glass

This is the world’s largest glass museum on the property of the World Headquarters for Corning Glass Works, makers of Corelle, Pyrex, Corningware, and much more. Everything you ever wanted to know about glass, it’s all here. There were displays on how the manufacture of glass has changed over the years, many interactive displays, special exhibits, and demonstrations on tempered glass, bullet-proof glass, telescopes, periscopes, microscopes, camera lenses, Fresnel lenses for lighthouses, fiber-optics, and, of course, Pyrex.

IMG_6455

There was glass from countries all over the world, centuries old.

IMG_6477

Also more contemporary works. One of my favorite pieces was the Continuous Mile:

After at least six hours at the museum we took the shuttle to Historic Downtown Corning, New York. On the side of one building is a mysterious face. I couldn’t find any information about it.

We didn’t spend too much time down on Market Street as it began to rain, so after a stop at one of the coffee shops and a visit to the Corningware Store we got back on the shuttle back to the museum.

I’d love to stop here again. That was yesterday, today we drove a lot, and we are spending the night in the camping lot of a very large service plaza on the Ohio Turnpike, riding out a thunderstorm.

Carousel Capital of the World!

We are half way through the state of New York. The landscape is still beautiful and green but the sky is darkening and we’re getting a bit of rain and wind.

IMG_6414

New York

We drove 200 miles and had enough of this so we pulled into a Walmart parking lot near Binghamton NY to ride out the weather. There is a tornado watch until 8pm.

IMG_6424

Walmart for the Night

The tornado watch was cancelled early and the rain stopped. We learned there was a carousel in the park next to us so we walked over there to see it. According to their brochure, of the fewer than 150 antique carousels remaining in the United States and Canada, SIX are located right here in six parks throughout Broome County, donated between 1919 and 1934 by George F. Johnson, a corporate leader of the Endicott Johnson Corporation and his family. He believed carousels should be enjoyed by everyone and insisted that the municipalities never charge money for a magic ride. All six carousels here are listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. They have undergone extensive restoration. This one we saw was gorgeous!

We didn’t get to see all six because of the weather and that they all operated on different schedules. We just got lucky that this one was right by us and it was open. So we got a free ride!

Here We Go Again

It’s been a whole month since we arrived in Concord, NH. We’ve been enjoying our time with our daughter (who drove up from Connecticut), our son and his wife, and our three-month old grandson. Many changes are happening here, job changes, new apartments, and a new town. Goodbye to Concord, hello to Keene, NH. As much as we love being here our home state of Minnesota calls us. After a few months seeing the friends and relatives there and taking care of business, like doctor and dental exams, maybe some maintenance on the RV, we will return to the New England area before going south for the winter.

The Family

The Family

On top of that we bought a new car while we were in Concord, a 2014 slightly used Honda CR-V. That was quite a process. New Hampshire does not have a sales tax on cars, but since we are legal residents of South Dakota we are required to pay 4% sales tax to the State of South Dakota. DakotaPost, our mail-forwarding company, helped us with the process of paying the tax and getting our new car registered and licensed in South Dakota while we are 1,500 miles away here in New Hampshire. We were able to take the license plates off the old Jeep and transfer them to the new car, so we’re good to go!

2014 Honda CRV

2014 Honda CRV

But before we could “go” we needed to have the new car equipped properly to be towed behind the motor home. We decided that Camping World here in Concord was our only resource to install the base plate and other parts for this operation, as well as the Invisibrake supplemental braking system. Parts were ordered and a deposit paid, then wait. Finally, 15 days later, the parts arrived. Camping World then kept our car for three and a half days to get this installed and it cost us $2,414.86 after a credit of $396 in discounts and coupons.

IMG_6386

Towing Hardware

The process of buying the car, getting it registered in South Dakota, and equipping it for towing took a total of 20 days which worked out just fine during the time we were here.

So off we go! We checked out of Cascade Campground around noon today and only drove 130 miles, stopping for the night at the Walmart in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The drive was so beautiful, both states are forested and so green!

Day Trip to Maine

We haven’t moved from our campground, and we’ll be here in Concord, New Hampshire, for at least two more weeks. Today we made a little car trip over to Main to visit our friend, Peter, who lives in Old Orchard Beach.  Yup! That’s our new car in the picture!

There are seafood restaurants all over the place in Maine, and lobster is king.  I’m in seafood heaven! Peter took us to a lobster shack for lunch where we had some pretty good lobster rolls.

Then we drove through Portland to another park. Here’s me in the back seat.

There seems to be no end to the beauty of Maine. But the fog is rolling back in again, taking away the panoramic views.

New Hampshire Family Time

Most RV parks and campgrounds this far north do not open until the middle or the end of May. But we did find one that just opened now. It’s a quiet campground, mostly seasonal campers who have been there for years. But they do have a few spots for transients like us. They gave us a nice large spot with a picnic table and a fire pit. A fire would be nice, but currently there is a burning ban because it’s been so dry.

We will be here for about three weeks, through the end of May. Since we will be spending time with family I won’t be blogging unless we go out and do some sightseeing while we’re here. But for sure I will resume the blog by June 1 when we head towards Minnesota.

Mohegan Sun

We said goodbye for now to our daughter in New Haven and are making our way up to Concord, New Hampshire. But we didn’t go far, only about 50 miles. We can’t make this trip without stopping at our favorite casino, the Mohegan Sun.

They have a large free parking lot just for the RVs, far away from the buses and trucks, and a shuttle cruises by every 20 minutes to pick up anyone who wants to go into the casino. This is the largest casino that we have ever seen and it’s beautiful inside. And there are lots of shops and some wonderful restaurants. If only I could eat that much! We’re only staying one night here, continuing up north in the morning.

Dinner and a Movie

This early in the spring most of the RV parks, State Parks, and campgrounds In Connecticut are not yet open for the season. We did find a place to park our RV in the back lot of a Mobile Home park, but that’s ok, it’s just for two nights while we visit our daughter, Teresa, in New Haven.

IMG_5877

She works at Yale University. It was such a beautiful spring day so we went for a walk around the campus. It’s finals week here, and the students are studying for their tests. Many are out enjoying the sun, and we saw several others carrying furniture and boxes as they move out of the housing areas.

The architecture here is incredible.  The library is especially impressive and we went in for a look.

New Haven is known for pizza! And there’s a pizza place on almost every corner in town. New Haven style pizza has a thin crust, traditionally baked in a coal-fired oven which gives it that crispy charred crust. How could we possibly be in New Haven without going out for pizza? Artisan pizzas are gaining in popularity. These are far from the usual pepperoni and mozzarella pizza’s we’re used to. The pizza we ordered had prosciutto, fig (yes I said fig) preserves, Gorgonzola cheese, and truffle honey.  I think next time we will go with the BBQ pork, mashed potato, roasted corn off the cob, cheddar cheese. Or maybe the rosemary chicken….

Outside the cherry trees and the apple trees are blooming as well as the rhododendrons. We couldn’t walk past this one without stopping for a pic.

A Walk in the Park

The McDade Recreational Trail is a 31-mile long trail along the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area. We are not ambitious enough to walk the whole thing, but we did a section of it. Just enough to get in our daily walk and take some pictures.

We are at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on the Delaware River. There are over 100 miles of hiking trails here so if you’re into hiking this is a great place to be. We did a little bit of hiking today just to find a few of the hundreds of waterfalls in the area.

The Visitor and Information Centers along the way will not be open until the end of May, but the trails are open.

Milford Monuments and an Aqueduct

Our plans are to visit our daughter in New Haven, Connecticut, but she has obligations and won’t be available until Monday. There are very few RV parks or campgrounds around New Haven and the ones that are there won’t open until the middle or the end of May. We did find one, but can’t get in until Monday, so we will just stay where we are while we wait.

In the meantime, we are seeing what there is to see around us here in Milford, Pennsylvania. Today we decided it would be monument day and go find some monuments.

The first one we found is in the middle of a side street in Milford PA.  This little traffic island is the burial site of Tom Quick who killed a lot of Indians in the late 1700’s.

IMG_5724

Tom Quick is Grave Site

The controversial monument has been removed and a plaque explains:

The Delaware Aqueduct, built in 1848, the oldest existing wire cable suspension bridge in the United States, crosses the Delaware River from Lackawaxen, PA to Minisink Ford, NY.

IMG_5746

The Delaware Aqueduct

It was originally built to carry canal boats over the Delaware River.

IMG_5748

The Delaware Aqueduct

Now the canal is gone. The National Park Service has repaired and restored and reconstructed the aqueduct, now a motor vehicle bridge.

IMG_5768

Delaware Aqueduct

German-born engineer John A Roebling designed it and then used similar technology to build the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

IMG_5771

The Delaware Aqueduct Bridge

We drove back to Milford, PA, on the New York side of the Delaware River along the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.

IMG_5775

Upper Delaware Scenic Byway

Underneath Interstate Highway 84 at Port Jervis, New York, is a Tri-States Monument. We had to drive through a cemetery to get to it, but we found it without too much trouble. Directly under the bridge is a taller monument indicating the New Jersey State Line on one side of it, and the New York State Line on the other side of it. But down by the water, by those two fishermen, is the smaller New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania Monument.

IMG_5789

Tri-State Monument

It was probably a big deal at one time, but seems no so much any more.

IMG_5787

Tri-State Monument, NY/NJ/PENN

Our last stop was out to High Point State Park, in New Jersey. Resembling the Washington Monument in Washington DC, the monument here was built in 1930 as a war memorial and is only 220 feet tall. It stands at the highest point in the State of New Jersey. All the buildings in the state park are locked up for the winter right now, and won’t be open until the end of May so we were not able to enter the monument and walk up the steps to the observation windows at the top. Oh darn.

The view from the base of the monument is incredible. You can see for miles and miles in 360 degree panoramic beauty.  In the pic below you can see the Delaware River in the center. On the right is New York State and to the left is Pennsylvania. Our RV park is in there somewhere. The monument is lit up at night and we can see it from our RV.

Since all the facilities are still closed there was no fee to enter the New Jersey State Park today, saving us $10.

Grey Towers

Plan ahead? Us? Nope. Spontaneity is how we roll. Usually we just drive until we feel like stopping and then look for a place to park for the night: an RV Park; a city, county, state, or national park; public lands, and Walmart is everywhere. It works for us.

But in early spring in the Northeast it doesn’t always work out. We should know better and call ahead so that this doesn’t happen:

IMG_5646

Closed for the Season

Oops! And with a tow vehicle behind us we cannot back up. Fortunately, the gate was not secured with a padlock so we could untie the cord, open the gate, drive in, turn around, and re-secure the gate behind us. Whew! Lucky us.

We are in Milford, Pennsylvania now. Here we find Grey Towers National Historic Site. Built in 1886, the house and 102 acres was donated (in 1963) by the Gifford Pinchot family, to the USDA Forest Service, the federal agency founded by their father.

The house will not be open for tours until May 23. We were able to walk around the property and take some pictures. Other than the lawn maintenance people, we were the only ones there.

Peep Peep

I like Peeps. They’re so cute and colorful. The factory is here in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It’s too bad they do not do factory tours, I’d love to see the little peeps popping out onto the conveyor belts. We drove by the factory just to have a look.

While we were out we drove over to Allentown. It seemed every street we went down was under construction. Between the construction, the detours, and the one-way streets we didn’t stay long. Oh, and how long do you stay stopped at a red light before deciding it’s never going to turn green and just go for it?

It’s another drizzly day with no sunshine, that sucks the color out of my pictures. At least it’s not the nasty stormy weather the south is having so we are grateful for that.

The security man at the Sands Casino told us that we were parked in the wrong parking lot and that we should move over to the lot where all the buses and the trucks are parked. We looked over and saw how busy and noisy the lot was and decided “nope” we’re leaving.

We found a Passport America member park about a half hour north of here. Silver Valley Campsites had a nice pull-through spot with full hook-ups for us. They just opened for the season last week. Other than the one travel trailer next to us it looked like all of the other RV’s here are permanent or seasonal residents. It’s pretty quiet right now, we may be the only ones here!

Bethlehem Steel Stacks

We went back in to Cabela’s to find the aquarium that we totally missed the day before. As we were looking around we also spotted this target shooting setup. That looks like fun.

The aquarium was tucked away behind the huge fishing supplies department. There were some nice big fish in there!

Today we moved about 40 miles east to Bethlehem, PA. We are staying overnight in the parking lot of the Sands Casino there. We’re way in the back of the farthest lot. Can’t see the casino from here, but we were impressed by the steel stacks behind us.

We followed a road back behind the steel works and discovered the Bethlehem Visitors Center.  There’s information in there about the demise of the Bethlehem Steel, once this country’s 2nd largest steelmaker and largest shipbuilder. After 122 years of steelmaking it shut down in 1995. At one point, around 1957, it employed up to 165,000 people.

The visitor center is the restored 1863 Stock House. Other buildings are currently undergoing restoration. This is a massive facility, much of it is gone, but the city is making great efforts to restore and re-purpose much of what is left.

The Sands Casino Resort is built on part of the old Bethlehem Steel site and the huge sign over the road to the entrance is made from the old ore crane of Bethlehem Steel.  The Sands includes an outlet mall, several nice restaurants including Emeril’s Chop House and two others with the Emeril name, and, of course, a very nice casino.

Hamburg and Cabela’s

It’s always fun to eat the local cuisine during our travels. Neither of us were quite sure just what Pennsylvania Dutch food is but this region is the place to find out. After reading some reviews on the internet we decided on Haag’s Hotel Restaurant in nearby Shartlesville. The sign outside says PA Dutch Food and the reviews go on about how great the authentic PA Dutch food is.

Haag’s Hotel Restaurant

The Pennsylvania Dutch are of German heritage (Deutsch), so basically what they eat is not all that different from what we eat at home in Minnesota. The menu really wasn’t that much different from most other restaurants. But I did spot one item that got my attention…the Haags Dutch Burger, which is Haag’s very own creation. It is a meatloaf burger wrapped in their house made potato filling (that is a PA Dutch thing made with mashed potatoes and white bread) coated with breadcrumbs and then deep fried. Served with beef gravy.

I chose a side of pot pie..the PA Dutch idea of a pot pie is not the pastry-topped stew that we are accustomed to, but actually more of a soup with a lot of large square noodles. The other side we chose was called pepper cabbage, which is a vinegar-based coleslaw made with finely chopped cabbage and green peppers. Bernie had roast beef and a side of potato filling.

After lunch we went over to Hamburg to see that.

There’s a nice park with a walking trail along the Schuylkill River. We walked for a part of it but it was getting very windy and cold… it is going to freeze tonight.

We had to leave the RV park we had been staying in because they are booked up for a special event this weekend, so we have moved 6 miles east to the parking lot of Cabela’s. And what a Cabela’s it is! This is the largest one in the country, 250,000 feet of retail space. It’s like a museum in there!

We need to go back in there tomorrow. I found out there is an aquarium in there somewhere and we missed it!

In their huge parking lot they have set aside an entire aisle specifically for RV parking. Trucks are directed to park in a different lot. Here is a free dump station and water supply. They also provide locking kennels for those who travel with dogs and don’t want to leave them in their vehicle while they shop, and a small corral in case you want your horse to get some exercise. Nice! Thank you Cabela’s!
