Fairbanks, AK

After a breakfast of sourdough pancakes and reindeer sausage we continued our drive up the Alaska Highway yesterday.

Milepost 1422 is the official end of the Alaska Highway at Delta Junction, Alaska.  It’s official now, we drove the whole thing.

Also greeting us at the Delta Junction Welcome Center are these giant mosquito sculptures.  Yikes!  But so far the mosquitoes have not been bad at all.

The museum across the street from the visitor center has some old equipment on display from the construction of the Alaska Highway.

A few miles out of town we stopped to look at this section of the 800-mile Trans Alaskan Pipeline.  It crosses a river at this point.

On the way to Fairbanks we see this moose and her calf on the side of the road.  Ugly, huh?

We spent the night at a roadside pull-out by a river south of Fairbanks.  It’s legal to do this in Alaska and there are pull-outs everywhere.

We stopped at The Knotty Shop south for a break.  It’s a nice souvenir shop with unusual burl wood sculptures out front.  The biggest one is a giant mosquito.  I’m sensing a theme here.

North Pole is a small town south of Fairbanks, population 2,200.  Of course we had to stop at Santa Claus House!  It was a fun stop.  Yes, Santa was there talking to kids and parents.  I bought some reindeer tracks candy and Bernie bought some reindeer meat sticks for snacks later.

We are parked in the Walmart lot in Fairbanks now.  There are about 10 other RV’s here with us.  We don’t plan on spending much time inside the RV so didn’t see the need for a RV park.  Our first venture out was to the local Farmers Market.

And then on to the visitor center for info where we watched a film on the Northern Lights and another film on what it’s like to live in Fairbanks at -40 degrees.  Just outside the visitor center is the entrance to the Riverwalk.  It begins with an arch made of antlers.

We saw these two girls in banana suits rafting on the river.  No idea why they were wearing banana suits!

Alaska at Last!

Before we left Watson Lake, BC, we walked up a block to see the Sign Post Forest.  Back in 1942 during construction of the Alaska Highway a homesick soldier added his hometown sign to an army highway mileage post.  Ever since then people from all over the world have been adding their hometown signs and now there are 70,000+ signs and growing.  We found several that we recognized from Minnesota.

So, on we go with our journey.

Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, is the largest town along the Alaskan Highway.  We stopped for a day and saw the local sights which included this actual retired DC-3 plane atop a pole that spins to always point into the wind.  This could be the world’s largest weather vane.

We spent the night in the Walmart parking lot along with 40 other RVers, yes I said that right.  I counted at least 40.  It looked like a RV sales lot.  The Walmarts in Canada all close at 10pm so we all had the lot to ourselves all night long.

Did I say what a beautiful drive the Alaskan Highway is?

Wildflowers Line the Ditches

Wildflowers Line the Ditches

Alaskan Highway

Up to this point the road has been fairly good, but not long after we left Whitehorse the road began to deteriorate.  The last 80 miles before the Alaska border consists of dips, bumps, potholes, road construction, patches, gravel breaks, and cracks where much of the time we could only drive 30 mph.  Needless to say, we were “all shook up” by the time we got to the Alaska border.  The RV held up well, no damage.

Much of the soil along the north Alaska Highway is of glacial origin and unsuitable for road embankments.  Frost heaves are frequent and that keeps the highway department busy trying to keep up with repairs.   An international project is underway to try to minimize the melting of the permafrost by allowing cold air to penetrate the road bed.  These vent-like structures on the side of the road in one area are part of that project.

At the United States Border Inspection Station we were asked just a few questions after presenting our passports.  The man was very nice and asked if we had any fruits or vegetables we bought in Canada or from the US.  One of the apples we had did not have the little sticker on it and we were told that if we wanted to keep that apple we needed to eat it right there.  We surrendered the apple and went on our way.

We have arrived in Tok, Alaska, the first town in Alaska on the Alaska Highway, population 1,435.  Tok is the one town in Alaska that the highway traveler must pass through twice, once on the way in to the state and once when leaving.  Unless you leave by boat there is no other way out.

The Tesoro gas station in Tok provides a free self-service RV wash, free sani-dump, and free tank fill of fresh water when you fill up with gasoline.  Thank you Tesoro for a much-needed treatment.  After that long, dirty, rough drive this was a refreshing treat.  The gas price today is $4.129/gallon.

One last thing…we have entered the Alaska Time Zone.  Yes, it’s a real Time Zone.  So we’re -3 hours from Minnesota.

Now here we are at Sourdough Campground “Home of the Sourdough Pancake Toss”.

In Yukon Territory

The further north we go the less traffic we see and the higher the prices of everything goes.  300+ miles driven today.  We just paid $1.569 per liter of gas.  With the exchange rate around $.95 it works out to approximately US$6.30 per gallon.  And we only get about 7+ miles per gallon!

The Alaska Highway is so very remote, we drive and drive and don’t see any signs of civilization, not even a telephone pole.  And the drive is the most beautiful drive we have ever driven.  There are so many mountains, rivers and streams, lakes and panoramic views to take your breath away.  The camera tries to capture it but still does not do it justice.

We are in Watson Lake now, in YUKON, in the only RV park in town, paying $39.90 for a spot in a crowded gravel parking lot.  We do have full hook-ups and free wi-fi that barely works as it is shared by the other 80 rigs that are here.  So I am up at 5am to get this blog done, which is ok because it’s daylight and I can’t sleep anyway.

We certainly have seen more wildlife than human.  There are buffalo here, and Stone Sheep which are much like Big Horn Sheep only smaller and with little horns, and we have seen 5 black bear.  We looked for caribou but have not seen any yet.

I am unable to upload any more pictures for you today, the wi-fi just cannot handle it now.  I’m lucky I got done what I did.

Canada, Banff, and Jasper

Finally, a brief moment of Internet service to squeeze in a quick blog just to let you all know we are still alive and well.  I have not posted anything since we entered Canada.  Not because we’ve been too busy, but because of internet issues.  International data rates are very expensive.  But that’s not all.  Canada has a lot of very remote areas and just finding any signal at all is tricky.  And it’s going to get worse before it gets better.  We have begun our trek up the world-famous Alaska Highway which begins in Dawson Creek, BC, and runs about 1,200 miles to the Alaska border through mountains and some very remote territory.

One of the first stops we made in Canada was to visit the RCMP Academy at Regina, Saskatchewan.  It was interesting but I had hoped to see some Mounties on the horses.  They used to have the horses here, but they have been moved to Ottawa now.

The visitor center at Moose Jaw, SK, hosts a 30′ moose at the entrance to the city.   We spent the day in Moose Jaw, taking a trolley tour of the city, and stopping for a piece of Saskatoon Berry Pie.

Our drive through Canada has been much like that of driving through North Dakota and Montana until we got to the Rocky Mountain area.  We spent a few days exploring Banff National Park, Lake Louise, driving up the Icefields Parkway to Jasper.  What a beautiful place!

Yup, we’re in bear country now.  This electrified fence surrounded the tent-camping area at Lake Louise.  I don’t know how well I could sleep in a tent even with that fence.  So glad to have a hard-sided camper.

Half way up the Icefields Parkway is the Columbia Icefield Centre.  Here you can take a bus out into the middle of a glacier and walk around on it for about $50 each.  It looked like fun, but we saved our $100 and looked at it from the visitor center.

We made it to Dawson Creek, B.C. where the Alaska Highway begins.   We are now 300 miles into it, only 900 more to get to the Alaska border!  This is going to be a very long drive, and very remote.  I hope to be able to blog more once we cross the Alaska border.

Canada

My nephew, Alex, lives in Grand Forks, Minnesota.  We stopped to have lunch with him before heading on up to Canada.  He took us to his favorite pizza place, Rhombus Guys.  It was good, that’s for sure.  We enjoyed our visit, brief as it was.

Alex

Alex

Not long after that we arrived at the US/Canadian border. There was confusion at first as the signs indicated cars and pickups to go to the left lands and semi’s to the right lanes.  But nothing about big-ass’d RV’s.  Eventually there was another sign saying RV’s go in with the cars.  Something to remember for next time.

We had our passports, driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations papers, and proof of insurance all ready for them, but the Border Patrol Agent asked only for the passports.  He then asked us what seemed like 50 questions about who we are and what our business is in Canada and what we’re bringing in with us..have we ever had speeding tickes, do we have weapons with us or do we at our home in Minnesota, what do we do for a living, do we know anyone in Canada, been here before, when did we get our passports, and on and on.   We could see other vehicles in front of us, including a 20′ travel trailer, pulled to the side and “gone through”.  I did not want to do that!  Eventually he gave us back our passports and said “have a good trip,” and we were on our way.

Immediately beyond the border crossing was the Manitoba Welcome Center where we stopped for info and to exchange our currency.  Exchange rate is .9975

I just got a message from Verizon that I’m paying some very expensive roaming charges so I won’t be blogging so much while we’re in Canada unless I can find wi-fi.

Alaska Bound!

And we’re off!

After a busy almost three months taking care of business in Minnesota we’re now headed for a two to three-month trip to Alaska.  We did have a last-minute fix-it for the Jeep (the toad) which cost us $900 just yesterday!  Whew! Glad it didn’t delay our launch.  Just looking on the positive side here.   And then there was a stop in St. Cloud for a $260 service appointment on the RV before we go.  Sheesh, what an expensive start!

First Stop: Walmart!

After all that, we didn’t get very far, landing in Alexandria, Minnesota, only about 100 miles from home.

Home Sweet Home

Here we are at “home” in Minnesota.  We will be parked in Bernie’s mother’s drive while we are here.  The snow is 99% gone but it’s still freezing at night.  It should start warming up now, wouldn’t you think?

Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home

I will not be blogging during the time we are here (who wants to hear about trips to the grocery store, doing laundry, and watching TV anyway?)  We do have some things to take care of while we are here, and some catching up to do with relatives.  Our plans are not certain for the next two months, but we do plan to RV to ALASKA this summer.  So, I WILL be blogging that trip!  Thanks for reading… and stay tuned!

Minnesota!

The last two days have been spent hanging out in Forest City, Iowa, at the Winnebago Industries Customer Service lobby with several other people in the same situation.  It’s been fun comparing notes and getting to know new friends.

While we were waiting we took the plant tour and got to see how the motor homes are built.  That was fascinating.  Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pictures, so none to share here with you.

But it was ok to take pictures in the museum where they house some vintage motor  homes and loads of other memorabilia.

All set up with a new windshield and maintenance done we continued on up north to Minnesota, which was only about 20 miles away.

Most of the snow is gone here except for where it had been piled up by snowplows, and the lakes are still iced over.

We’re in Albert Lea tonight, had a good dinner and a great visit with the relatives.  Going further north tomorrow.

A Pit Stop

Yup, it froze over night.  The brown grass had a light covering of snow, but the streets were clear.   The RV park which had been filled to near capacity is now near empty as one by one the snowbirds moved out on their way to their homes in the north.

IMG_8965

Morning Snow

A few hours later here we are at Winnebago Industries in Forest City, Iowa, the manufacturing plant where our motor home was built.  We are here for a new windshield – one without a crack in it, and to see about getting some solar panels installed, along with some standard maintenance.  Hopefully it will only take one day, but it could be two days.

IMG_8970

We are parked in the Customer Service parking lot with three other rigs also awaiting service.  We are provided with electricity while we are here, which we are grateful for.  The  overnight temps are to be around 15F, brrrr.  Now if we had stayed in Arizona we would be dealing with lows more like 54F.  Hmm..

Osceola, Iowa

Driving only 100 miles today.  It’s too cold to hurry north!  Even here in Osceola, Iowa, the forecasted low is to be 25F and some possible snow flurries.

Lakeside Casino in Osceola, Iowa, has a full hook-ups campground for $20/night.  We arrived early and had our pick of spots.  After enjoying the Easter Sunday buffet in the casino restaurant we returned to the RV and watched as RV’s rolled in one after another until the park has nearly filled up.  Almost everyone here are Minnesota snowbirds flocking home.

To The Salt Mines!

We’re in Hutchinson….OK, so it’s Hutchinson, KANSAS.  We won’t be to Hutchinson, MINNESOTA, until next week.

Here, we stopped to visit the Underground Salt Museum   So cool!  You take the 90-second double-deck hoist (elevator-like ride) down 650 feet to the mined out salt caverns below.  Here is where the museum is.

Kansas Underground Salt Museum

Kansas Underground Salt Museum

After looking through the museum and the gift shop, we rode a small gauge train through some of the huge chambers, and then a tram ride through more chambers where we saw old mining equipment and items left from miners who worked there in the 1920’s.  The salt is still being mined today, but we could not see the active part.  This is not your table salt that comes from this mine, but rather it’s where the road salt comes from.

And, because of its unique location, tremendous security, and away from earthquake zones, impervious to weather and pests, and it’s naturally cool, dry, stable environment it is perfect for underground vaults and storage.  They have over three million feet of storage space available.

Still OK

One of the things we liked about being in the Desert Southwest was the lack of flying insects.  Shops, restaurants, and homes would leave their doors and windows stand open.  It’s not like that in the Midwest.  The scenery is changing here too, we’re seeing more flat green fields and cow pastures now.  We are enjoying seeing them through our bug-splattered cracked windshield.

We stopped for a while in Kingfisher (The birthplace of Sam Walton) and visited the Chisholm Trail Museum.   This very nice museum showcases Oklahoma’s history in relation to the Chisholm Cattle Drive Trail, the Land Run of 1889, early pioneer settlers, and the 2nd Territorial Governor of Oklahoma.

East to OK

The Big Texan is a tourist stop not to be missed as you pass through Amarillo, Texas.   They have truck and RV parking in the back, so parking here was no problem for us.   It looks a bit corny on the outside but the inside is full of personality.  Our cowboy waiter was very good as was our food.

Tonight we are in Double D RV Park, a small RV park in Texola, Oklahoma, a small town on the Texas/Oklahoma border.  There are cows in the pasture by us.  It is actually a rare treat to see free roaming cows in a grassy field and not in one of the many factory farms we have been seeing around the country.

Tucumcari, New Mexico

As we leave Albuquerque and head west on I-40 the mountains disappear and the road flattens out.

Heading West

Heading West on I-40

The winds started picking up so we stopped at Tucumcari for the night, only 175 miles from where we had been.

We checked our Passport America directory and found Cactus RV Park, downtown Tucumcari, on Historic Route 66.  This is a small park, only 34 RV sites, no restrooms or showers.  The sign was old and faded and the office has seen better days.  We were the only RV here when we checked in, so we were beginning to wonder if we made the right choice.  Have no fear, the people who run the place are very nice and very helpful.  The site we are in was 100% level, no correction needed; we only put our jacks down to stabilize from the wind.  The sites are all clean and wide and long and we have full hookups including cable TV and free wi-fi that works.  More rigs arrived and now it is filled nearly to capacity.  This is a great spot for an overnight stay.

Minnesota Bound

We left Benson this morning and began our journey back to Minnesota.  We lost one hour when we crossed the Arizona into New Mexico border.  The weather is nice, a good day for a drive.  One of the first things we saw was a Border Patrol Checkpoint just north of Deming, New Mexico.   “How many people on board?”, “Are you both U.S. Citizens?” “Have a good day”, and waved us on.

We are spending tonight in a Walmart parking lot in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.  Originally named Hot Springs, the town changed its name in 1950 to that of the popular game show to get that show to broadcast a show from their town. We’re not exploring the area, will save that for another time.  There are 7 other RVs in the lot here with us.

We’re back in Benson, stopping to visit relatives before beginning our migration to Minnesota.  The Benson I-10 RV Park is where we camped when we were here in December.  We’re staying here again because it’s a good clean and level park and it is also a Passport America park so we get the best price.
