History in Granite

We awoke this morning to unusual sounds.  Looking out the window across the RV lot we saw this hot-air balloon being inflated in the casino parking lot.  That was a nice view to start the day.

After breakfast we left Yuma and headed west on I-8, entering into the Pacific Time Zone.  The Official Center of the World is only a few miles beyond the Arizona/California border.  We stopped here last year and had to stop to see what had changed.

Two-inch thick granite walls have inscribed everything that Jacques-Andre Istel thinks is worth telling future generations.  This is a work in progress.  For $3 you can watch the video that explains the whole thing and then walk freely about the grounds.

For $300 you can have your own name engraved here too! or anyone else’s.

I thought this was a fascinating project.  It will take several years to complete it, but when it’s done it will be there for future generations.  The walls are engineered to last 4,000 years and become “the one book that survives.”  They hope that in the future thousands of walls will be built by our successors.

Dates

In addition to all the lettuce and other vegetables growing around the Yuma countryside dates are another big crop.  The Imperial Date Gardens is one of the largest distributers of the Medjool date in this country.  They also ship internationally.  Today they were offering a free tour of the facilities so we went to see.

Our guide explained how the dates are grown and how they’re picked.

Then we moved over into processing building.  The picking season is over so the workers are gone, but our guide was very good at explaining the process.  They do not do tours when the workers are there.  Then we sampled.

A Little Move

We’re still in Yuma, but we’ve moved to a casino with an RV parking lot on the west side of town about 10 miles west of where we were.

It’s a gravel lot, and there are still large puddles here from yesterday’s rain storm.  All we did today was drive in the country.  We found a date farm and bought some more dates.  The rest of the day was just chillin’ at home.  We had the pleasure of seeing a very colorful sunset tonight reflecting in the puddle.

The Sun!

Finally, the sunshine has returned!  Good!  Last night we had a real gully washer with thunder and lightning.  It didn’t last long, just a passing storm cell.  But it did make a mess of the desert sand we’re parked on.

Last week we bought our first solar panel back in Quartzsite, and also bought solar garden lights to use for night lights.  We were feeling very “solarly” (is that a word?) and found the instructions on the internet on how to build a solar oven out of a card board box and tinfoil, and did just that.  And wouldn’t you know it…the sun disappeared and the clouds and rain came.

Well, today the sun returned!  wooo!  Cooking time!  I had a large sweet potato I’ve been waiting to cook.  It was too big for the pot I bought at the Quartzsite flea market specifically for use in the solar oven, so I had to cut it in half.  Then we assembled everything, placed it outside in the mud and the sun, hoped for the best and went to see historic downtown Yuma.  The high temp for today was only around 60F.

As we were walking around Historic Downtown Yuma we spotted a bird in the window of this old hotel and went to investigate.

Inside we found some friendly gentlemen sitting at a table.  They introduced us to the bird and we chatted a bit before moving on.

Having never used a solar oven before, and being rather amateurely made, we did not know what to expect.  The slight breeze we had today had blown it out of sync with the sun, not sure how long it had been that way.  So we corrected the orientation,  crossed our fingers, and waited and waited.  About six hours total was all we could stand.  and.. yay!  The potato was perfectly done!  So we ate it.

A Walk In The Park

Still cloudy.  Our adventure out today was to find some city parks to play in.  One of the first ones we stopped at was John F Kennedy Memorial Park.  While we were walking around the grounds we had to do a double-take on this one.  It looked so much like a hockey rink we had to take a closer look.  Being from small-town Minnesota this would not be unusual at all, but in Yuma??  Turns out it is not ice, but it is an inline skate rink.  It’s the same thing only different, right?

Inline Skate Rink

The Yuma Territorial Prison is something any visitor to Yuma should make a point to see.  We have seen it a few times already so are not visiting it today.  Riverside Park is just down the hill from the Yuma Territorial Prison.  There is a nice wide multi-purpose trail that leaves the park and follows along the Colorado River for miles.  I don’t know exactly how long, further than we walked anyway, and we walked for almost an hour before turning around.

Multi-purpose trail

There’s Bernie waiting for me.  The Yuma Territorial Prison (water tank and guard tower) is up the hill on the left, and the Ocean to Ocean Bridge ahead.  That bridge, built in 1915, was the first and only vehicular traffic bridge over the lower Colorado River for 1,200 miles, and formed a critical link on the Old Spanish Trail Highway connecting St. Augustine, FL, on the Atlantic Ocean with San Diego, CA, on the Pacific Ocean.

Yuma Farmers Market

Another wet rainy morning.  We heard about a Farmer’s Market that sells only locally grown produce taking place this morning at the Yuma Indoor Marketplace so we went in search of it.  It was actually outside, not inside, as we assumed, but that’s ok.  We bought more dates, a bulb of fennel, and some oranges.  Neither of us had ever had fennel before so we gave it a shot.

IMG_7521

Farmer’s Market

While we were there we walked through the Yuma Indoor Marketplace.  There were several vendors in there selling their wares.  Not too different from what we saw in Quartzsite, only this was inside and had a more permanent feel to it.  In fact, I think I saw some of those same vendors at Quartzsite too.

IMG_7522

Yuma Indoor Marketplace

On our way home we passed this team picking lettuce in the rain.

Picking in the Rain

Picking in the Rain

After lunch the rain stopped so we went out again.  There is a U-Pick-It farm about a mile north of where we are camped.  We stopped there and had dessert in their snack shop and looked around the gift shop.  The name of the u-pick-it is FROM THE FARM and it’s north of Yuma on State Route 95 about a mile north of the VFW.

Cabbage. Could be in your kitchen in a few days.

Cabbage. Could be in your kitchen in a few days.

Right behind FROM THE FARM is The McPhaul Bridge, a 798 foot long  suspension bridge, opened in 1929; it used to span the Gila River.  It has been named to the Arizona State Register of Historic Engineering Sites.  In 1968 the river was diverted when a dam was built upstream and the highway was rerouted over a smaller bridge.  Now it spans only desert sand and rocks.

The Bridge to Nowhere

The Bridge to Nowhere

When we got home we decided to go for a walk in the woods west behind where we are camped but after hearing paint-ball guns and spatters and hoots and hollers we changed our mind and went east through an underpass across the road and the train tracks to the other side.  This area is very popular with the off-road vehicles as evidenced by the many tracks we saw.  It was not muddy from the train, it’s just hard desert sand.

Yuma Produce

Yuma is the winter vegetable capital of the world.  There are miles and miles of different varieties of lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, and more.  There are also fields of wheat and cotton, and groves of oranges and grapefruit.  Oh yes, and dates!

IMG_7489

Date Palms

Rain is in the forecast so we did our exploring this morning.  We stopped at a date farm and bought some fresh dates and shared a scoop of date ice cream.

There are farm stands along the side of the road that sell locally grown produce as well as some items that are imported in from other areas.  There is everything here you can imagine.  We stopped at this one and picked up a few things.

IMG_7502

Roadside Farm Stand

Lettuce Fields

Lettuce Fields

THIS is why there are trains going by every 15 minutes.  The produce is continually being picked and processed.  Lettuce that is picked in the morning can be in Phoenix by the afternoon.  The fields are in all different stages of use, and replanted right away, each field can yield several crops in one season.

IMG_7504

This lettuce field has just been picked

And then the rain came.  Not a lot, but just enough to be annoying, so went home.  Yuma gets only 2.75 inches of rain a year, so this rain is a blessing.  Usually all the fields are irrigated by a sophisticated system of canals and pipes bringing in water from the Colorado River.

Yuma

There are so many people in RVs at Quartzsite it makes me wonder who is left at home??  It was quite an experience, and we had a good time.  We boondocked for one week, but now our holding tanks are full and we’re almost out of water.

While there are dump stations and water available in Quartzsite for a fee we decided this was a sign for us to move on.  So we headed down Highway 95 to Yuma.  Yuma is in the southwest corner of Arizona, bordering California and Mexico.

Just north of Yuma, behind the VFW building, is another BLM dispersed camping area, also free.  The host gave us directions to where we could dump our holding tanks and get fresh water for a fee, so after accomplishing that task we are now spending the night here.

IMG_7481

BLM Free camping behind the VFW in Yuma

Free is good.  However, there are train tracks very near here and a train passes what seems like every 15 minutes since we arrived.  We’ll decide tomorrow if we will stay or go.

Our RV expenses for today:  $10 to dump tanks, and $5 to fill up with water at Laguna Mobile Home & RV Park in Yuma.

Quartzsite

We haven’t done much the last few days, just enjoying the nice weather and hanging out.  We’ve been exploring more of the flea market shows here.  It was a bit chilly this morning. Jacket and gloves were necessary.

IMG_7471

Downtown Quartzsite

It gets really really dark out here in the desert boondocking area as there are no security lights at all.  We don’t have any hookups so we need to be very conservative with our utilities in order to stay out here as long as we can.   We rely on battery power for almost everything.   The solar panel we bought the other day helps keep our batteries charged.  Today I picked up a pair of solar yard lights.  These were meant to be toppers for the posts on your deck, but I figured they would work quite well inside our rig as night lights.  Free light!  Free is good.  Hopefully leaving them in the front window during the day will provide enough charge to keep the lights running all night.

Quartzsite and Solar

Boy, that sunshine here sure is intense.  The high was only something like 71 it felt warmer than that.

Today was the first day of the 30th Annual Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show, “the largest gathering of RVs and RVers”.  We went in early to beat the crowds and it’s a good thing we did.  We would have walked but we are parked 2.5 miles from the big tent and thought walking home after all that would not be a good idea.

We’ve been thinking about adding solar panels to our RV but are hesitant about having them installed permanently on the roof, having to climb up there to tilt them and again to lower them every time we move, limiting our parking orientation every time we move so the panels face south.  Wouldn’t be so bad if we stayed put for any length of time, but we move around a lot.  Compromise.  A portable panel that folds up and fits into a suitcase.  Anyway it’s our baby step into solar living.

IMG_7439

Our First Solar Panel

It looked a lot bigger in the store!  Also, the problem with this kind is worrying about someone taking it when we go out.  RVers generally do not steal from each other but these days you can’t be too careful.

We met some people who had 6 solar panels mounted on the top of their rig.  We sat and visited with them all afternoon and they gave us lots of good information and tips about solar as well as other general fulltime RVing tips and info.

Quartzsite

Quartzsite, Arizona, is like no other place on earth.  Every year, in January, thousands of RVers come here, some to spend three months, others just a few days.  This small town of about 3,000 people blossoms into big city population for the winter.  There are many shows and swap meets that draw visitors here, all with free admission and free parking.

Many people stay at one of the 15 RV parks here, or in one of the very inexpensive Long Term Visitor parking areas in the surrounding Sonoran desert, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).  There are also designated BLM free “dispersed camping” areas.  Scaddan Wash is the name of the dispersed camping area we were in last year.  It’s very close to town.  We drove to the far edge of the area, away from the crowd, found a level spot and set up camp.  Did I mention it’s free?  Free is good.

Tonopah, AZ

Here we are at Saddle Mountain RV Park in Tonopah, Arizona.  It’s only about an hour’s drive west from where we were, but with our Passport America discount it is half the price we were paying at Goodyear.  It’s still too cold to go to Quartzsite.  At least here we have the electricity to run our electric heaters.

When we arrived here the water service to the campground had been shut off while they make repairs on the pipes that had frozen overnight last night.   Water service was restored around 3 pm.  But it will for sure freeze again tonight, forecast low to be 26 degrees.

The Verizon 3G Internet service is very slow here.

Our RV expenses for today:   $24.76 for propane fill.  $99 gasoline ($3.059/gallon), and $30 for two nights, for a total of $153.76

Daily Post

Arizona is in the midst of a cold spell.  It was 25 degrees here when we woke up this morning.  When it warmed up a bit we saw that a few spaces down in an unoccupied space the water spigot was spewing forth.  It had frozen in the night and when it thawed it let loose.  It was too far away to get a picture out the window and too cold for me to want go outside to take a better picture but we did call the office and report it.  I suspect there were others we didn’t see.  It’s supposed to be 27 here tonight, but 20 overnight at Quartzsite, so we’re still in no hurry to get there.

We did some shopping and some cooking and TV watching, but other than that we just hung out in the RV, waiting for the weather to warm up.

On The Road Again

There are hundreds of 55+ retirement communities around the Phoenix area, most of them in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa.  We’ve spent the last three weeks in three different resorts here.  Very nice places for snowbirds to spend their winters.  From my observation, the most snowbirds here are from Canada, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, with a few other states thrown in.  All the people here are so very friendly and will stop and visit with you, and they all seem so happy.  Such a contrast from regular city living.

Good for them.  I guess we’re just not ready for this winter lifestyle yet; we’re getting the urge to move on.  We’ve had fun catching up with friends and relatives in this area, there are actually quite a few people here we know.   Also, our discount week ends today so we checked out of Valle del Oro and headed west.

But, the weather has taken a cold turn, freezing overnight for several days.  Our plan is to get to Quartzsite where we will camp for free out in the desert without any electricity, but seeing as it’s so cold we are dragging our feet about that until the weather warms up a bit.

Tonight and tomorrow night we are staying at Cotton Lane RV Resort in Goodyear, Arizona, just west of Phoenix.  It’s only about one hour’s drive from where we were but it’s a step in the right direction.

Resort Hopping

The “daily” post has been missing for the last week or so.  We are fine.  It’s just that since we arrived in Mesa we’ve been visiting with neighbors and friends and relatives, doing some shopping, and walking around the resort, and eating too much.  It was nothing I felt compelled to blog about, just everyday life.

Of course we are watching the weather back in Minnesota, kinda missing the zero degree temperatures, the ice, and the feet of snow (but not really).  It’s been cool here, 60 in the daytime and sometimes 32 overnight.

Our discount club membership allowed us to stay at Towerpoint Resort for the limit of one week, then we moved next door to Mesa Regal Resort for the limit of one week, and now we have moved to Valle del Oro Resort and will be here for the limit of one week.  Next Saturday we plan to leave this area and go west towards Quartzsite and Yuma, Arizona, and then on to California.

The electricity at Towerpoint went out this morning before we left for the flea market.  It was still out when we returned and remained out for the rest of the day.  We could see the power crew activity out the window of Shirley’s house.  At one point the power came back on but after a few minutes we saw a big flash, heard a bang, and saw a puff of black smoke and workers running.  Nobody was hurt, but the power was out for a few more hours.

Superstition Mountains

Here we are at Towerpoint Resort in Mesa.  We’ve been here since Saturday, spending time with family. We are here until Saturday morning when we have to look for another home.

IMG_7260

The five of us went to visit the Superstition Mountains today.  Our first stop was at the Superstition Mountain Museum. It has turned out to be a cold day so we had to bundle up.  But even though it’s only about 55 around here we can’t complain very loudly since we know it’s around zero degrees and a very thick blanket of snow at home in Minnesota.  But then it began to sprinkle on us just a little.

Just beyond the Superstition Mountain and the museum is the old mining town of Goldfield.  Here you can see museums, take a mine tour, ride a train, or ride a horse.  While we didn’t do any of that we did witness a shootout, had lunch in the old saloon, did some sight-seeing and shopping.  And then it began to sprinkle on us.
